BREAKING: There are currently 2 active gunmen at Hillsong Church, Century City in Cape Town. Police have circled the building. The 2 men attempted to rob the church, following their men’s conference this weekend, which consisted of many cash donations to the church.
“According to information, two suspects, one armed, entered the church and robbed the employees inside the premises of their cellphones,” said Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana.
Rwexana said the incident was under investigation.
The robbers tied up the cleaning staff and security guards.
UPDATE: It has been confirmed that all Hillsong staff are out the building and are safe at this point.
There are rumours spreading on social media that this is a hostage situation, yet this has been confirmed to be inaccurate. Western Cape police clarified that it was not a hostage situation, as had been claimed on social media.
The Canal Walk centre has closed off all roads surrounding the church.
