HUGE SUCCESS – the ACDP has been hard at work on an amendment to the Labour Laws in South Africa. This amendment provides for parental and adoption leave in support of strong healthy families, as opposed to only the maternity leave that is currently in place. This Bill is now sitting on President Ramaphosa’s desk, ready to be signed into law.
The Select Committee on Economic and Business Development deliberated and finalised the Labour Laws Amendment Bill on August 7th. The Bill has now passed through both the National Assembly (NA) and the National Council of Provinces (NCPO) and will now go to President Cyril Ramaphosa to be signed into law.
Cheryllyn Dudley thanked everyone who contributed to the cause when she was congratulated by her party:
“I would just like to thank members of Parliament, especially the chairperson and members of the Select Committee on Economic and Business Development and members and the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Labour for the work they have done in interrogating the need and suitability of this Bill and for ensuring its passage through Parliament into law.”
“The legal services office at Parliament – in particular Desiree Swartz, the mastermind who worked on the drafting, and Michael Prince, who has so competently advised the NCOP on legal issues through this phase – for the excellent work done!”
“COSATU, workers around the country, mothers and fathers to be, the media, and all who added their encouragement and input, you are much appreciated and inspire us with the hope of a shared future that impacts positively on families and building a healthy nation. Thank you Jesus for walking me through this and so much more – my trust is in you always,” she said.
