Moving Forward Together
The Summit has never been about the work of one individual speaker or leader. God has blessed the Summit in ways we never imagined possible – inspiring and equipping Christian leaders across North America, and at more than 1500 locations in 135 countries.
Last year, more than 400 000 people attended the Summit and were blessed by the wide array and quality of the teaching and leadership training they received.
In recent months, several media reports carried stories of allegations of misconduct on the part of senior pastor and founder Bill Hybels. The board and staff of the Willow Creek Association have processed the resulting controversy with a great amount of prayer in an emotional and unfamiliar time.
At our regularly scheduled WCA board meeting on April 4, Bill—with the full agreement of the WCA board(USA)—concluded that the allegations against him had become a significant distraction to the global ministry of the WCA and the Summit. The board and Bill agreed that it would be best for him to step off the WCA Board, away from any leadership responsibilities and not appear or speak at the 2018 Global Leadership Summit.
Through all this turmoil we have been reminded of the strength we have when Christian brothers and sisters stand together in challenging times.
GLS Is Approaching The Situation Head On
On 9th August, Craig Groeschel opened the Summit by addressing the events of the past few months, setting the path and tone for the GLS moving forward.
Later, Danielle Strickland spoke directly into the broader conversation of God creating men and women to be “better together”, addressing the current tensions and what’s broken in today’s narrative.
Continued Commitment To The Truth
The WCA is committed to complete and continued transparency and is initiating a fully independent investigation led by trusted Christian leaders, extending grace to those involved, while also seeking to discover the truth.
Current Status In South Africa
We are committed to keep you informed as we continue to live in the tension of being independent from the situation unfolding in USA while also praying for all those involved Our team remains focussed on the mission that God has called us to:
“To energize Christians and mobilize churches globally by growing their leadership skills and commitment to maximize Kingdom impact.”
We humbly ask that you continue to pray for the Summit, for restoration and reconciliation for all those involved in this situation.
We are continuing to pray for God’s guidance and submitting to the Holy Spirit’s leading as we continue planning your GLS experience.
The WCA SA stands against gender-based violence.
The WCA SA will live with the tension until the outcome of the next independent investigation into the allegations against Bill Hybels and at the same time continue with our vision to help Christian leaders maximize their Kingdom impact through the Global Leadership Summit.
God works all things together for the Good
This situation has highlighted a need for us to increase our awareness and knowledge on the subject of gender-based violence. We invite you to join us on this journey. At the GLS we will have experts who will host lunch time workshops to grow our skills and provide resources and tools.
